T: Good morning, pupils!
I'm glad to see you. How are you today?
What is your mood?
Let's start our lesson. Today we are going to talk
about English literature and William Shakespeare.
Are you ready to start the lesson?
I. Warming-up.
T: Match the
halves of the sentences to make famous quotations from Shakespeare's plays and
try to give literary translation of these quotations into Ukrainian.
1. All's well that ends well. (Усе добре, що
добре закінчується.)
2. А11 that glisters is not gold. (He все те золото, що блищить.)
3. Brevity is the soul of wit. (Стислість - душа таланту.)
4. Much ado about nothing. (Багато галасу даремно.)

II. Group work. Speaking.
T: Let's speak about Shakespeare's life.
PI: Shakespeare was born on April, 23, 1564. His father, John Shakespeare, moved to Stratford-on-Avon about 1550. The writer's mother, Mary Arden, was the daughter of a rich farmer. John Shakespeare and his wife lived in a two-storey house. This house is one of the most famous places in the world now. There is a small room on the second floor, where Shakespeare was born.
P2: William went to the grammar school in Stratford, but he was educated more by the people and nature about him than by school. When William was only 18 he married Anna Hathaway, the daughter of a farmer from a village not far from Stratford. Three years later the young Shakespeare who had three children, went to London theatre called "The Globe", which was opened in 1599.
P3: Shakespeare wrote 37 plays, 154 sonnets and2 poems. He is known as a writer of comedies, historical dramas and tragedies. Among his comedies are "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Comedy of Errors". His tragedies are "Othello", "Romeo and Juliet", "Hamlet".
T: Now look at these pictures, which describe the places connected with Shakespeare's life. What places can you see in these pictures?
P1: This is Mary Arden's house, three miles north-west of Stratford. Here lived Shakespeare's mother. This is a typical farm house of the period.
P2: Shakespeare's birthplace in Henley Street. John Shakespeare lived and kept his shop in this house. His eight children were born here. Two of them died young.
P3: This is the classroom where Shakespeare was educated.
P4: Anna Hathaway's cottage, a mile from Stratford, where she was born in 1556, and lived until she married William Shakespeare in 1582.
P5: This is the place where Shakespeare died. It was a big house brought by Shakespeare for his family when he was still in London. Here he spent the last years of his life. Unfortunately, the house was destroyed.
P6: This is the Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare was buried. Visitors coming to Stratford admire the beauty of the church and honour his memory.
P7: Another memorial to Shakespeare is the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. The first building was opened on Shakespeare's birthday in 1879 and destroyed by fire in 1926
P8: The bronze statue of Shakespeare, presented to Stratford by Lord Ronald Gower in 1888. Shakespeare's figure is high above the ground and on the ground there are small figures of Shakespeare's famous characters.
T: What other interesting facts did you find about Shakespeare's life?
P1: Shakespeare's father was engaged in the wool industry and some documents of that time indicate that John Shakespeare was illiterate; he marked his name with a cross, because he was unable to write.
P2: William was a very good pupil. He was still a boy when he began to produce plays.
P3: From 1594 to 1608, Shakespeare was fully involved in London theatre life. He wrote two plays a year. And as we know Shakespeare wrote 2 long poems "Venus and Adonis" and "Lucrece".
P4: There is a garden behind the Shakespeare's house in Stratford-on-Avon. All the flowers trees and plants that are mentioned in Shakespeare's plays are growing in this garden.
P5: Every year, since 1879, Shakespeare Festival has been celebrated in
Stratford-on-Avon, where Shakespeare was born. On this day thousands of people
go to the church where they put flowers on the poet's grave.
P6: In the last 35 years all the plays by Shakespeare have been filmed.
III. Reading.
T: We can't speak about Shakespeare without speaking about theatre. I'll give you text for reading "Development of Drama in England" and you should say what theatre was in ancient times.
IV. Writing
activity.
T: I give you some activity "Do you know Shakespeare's theatre well?" Choose the correct variant.
T: What is theatre?
P: It is a special building or place for the performance of plays.
T: Now I want to speak about one of the brilliant play "Romeo and Juliet". So, what is this play about?
PI: "Romeo and Juliet" is a tale of true love that is stronger than death. The young lovers, Romeo and Juliet, are of two rich Italian families: Juliet was a Capulet, Romeo - a Montague. These families had quarreled with each other.
P2: Romeo saw Juliet for the first time at a ball in the Capulet's house. For Romeo to enter the house of a Capulet meant mortal danger. Romeo put on a mask and went to the Capulet's ball. At this ball that Romeo and Juliet met for the first time, and fell in love with each other.
P3: After that ball Romeo wanted to see her again, to
learn if she loved him too. So at night he climbed a high wall and got into the
orchard, which was under Juliet's window. Romeo calls Juliet to her window.
Juliet answers that she has also fallen in love with him.
T: So, let's enjoy the balcony scene. (There is sound of
ballet "Romeo and Juliet").
Romeo and

Romeo: It is my lady; O, it is my love.
O, that she knew she were.-
She speaks, yet she says nothing; what of that?
Her eye discourses, I will answer it.-
I am too bold; this not to me she speaks.
See, yow she leans her cheek upon her hand.
O, if I were a glove upon that hand,
That I might tougch her cheek.
Juliet: Ah, me.
Romeo: O, speak again, bright angel.
Juliet: O, Romeo, Romeo. Wherefore art thou Romeo?
Or, if I'll no longer be a Capulet.
Romeo: Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?
Juliet: T'is but thy name that is my enemy:-
O, be some other name.
What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
Romeo, doff thy name;
And for that name, which is not part of thee,
Take all myself
Romeo: I take thee at thy word:
Call me but love, and I'll be new baptized:
I never will be Romeo.
Juliet: How earnest thou higher, tell me, and wherefore?
The orchard walls are high and hard to climb.
Romeo: With love's light wings did I over fly these walls;
Juliet: If they do see you here, they will murder you.
Romeo: I have night's cloak to hide me from their sight;
And but thou love me, let them find me here.
Juliet: О gentle Romeo,
If thou dost love, pronounce it faithfully.
Romeo: What shall I swear by?
Juliet: Do not swear at all.
Good-night, good-night, as sweet repose and rest
Come to my heart as that within my breast.
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
I hear some noise within; dear love, adieu.
Romeo: О blessed,
blessed night. I am afeard,
Being in night, all this is but a dream.
T: It's one of the best-known love story off all
centuries.
What music have you just heard?
P: It was music for famous Ballet "Romeo and Juliet' by Serhiy Prokofyev.
T: What are the main characters of this tragedy?
P: The main characters are Romeo and Juliet.
P1: Juliet is a very young girl. But her deep feeling for
Romeo is fast turning her into a woman. And she was very courageous. True love
has taught her to look upon Romeo as the man to whom she is ready to give her
heart. His name and his family are of no importance to her.
P2: Romeo, on his side, is not only ready to overstep the rule his class, but the first real feeling makes him understand that love for woman is higher.
T: Listen to me and say is it True or False?

VI. Reciting
sonnets.
T: Many outstanding poets wrote about love. They created most of them masterpieces. Shakespeare's sonnets about the endless connection of Love and Death. Did anybody learn any sonnets by heart?
P1: What is the youth? Infatuated fire.
What is the maid? Ice and desire.
The world works on,
A rose will bloom, It then will fade.
So does the youth,
So does the fairest maid.
Comes the time
When one sweet smile
Has its season for a while,
Then love's in love with me.
Some may think only to merry
Others with tears and terry,
Mine is the very best fairy,
Cupid he rules us all.

VII.
Summing-up.
T: Since our lesson is going to the end. I'd like to
summarize. I think all of you felt the atmosphere of Shakespeare's times. And
we have to say "Thank you, William Shakespeare!"
And at the end I want to hear your letter to
Shakespeare that we wrote at our last lesson.
(Pupils had to imagine that Shakespeare lives nowadays and write him a letter.)

A book of your sonnets had just come at hand. Great! I
had a magical evening and I felt that I just had to write and tell you
wonderful your sonnets are.
I hope you don't mind my writing to you. I'm sure you
